Is Today a Business Day?

A business day must meet two conditions:

1. It's a weekday — Monday through Friday
2. It's not a public holiday — The specific holidays depend on your country

Saturdays and Sundays are never business days. If a public holiday falls on a weekend, some countries observe it on the nearest weekday (typically Monday).

This is a simple question with real operational consequences. Banks won't process wire transfers on non-business days, ACH direct deposits pause until the next business day, courts and government offices are closed, and many contract deadlines that fall on a non-business day automatically shift to the next available business day. Knowing the answer instantly — without checking a calendar and cross-referencing a holiday list — saves a step in dozens of everyday workflows, from scheduling a same-day wire transfer to confirming whether a legal filing deadline is actually today.

Customer service teams, logistics coordinators, and finance departments often need this answer multiple times a day for different countries simultaneously — a shipment "arriving in 2 business days" from a US warehouse counts differently than the same promise from a UK or Australian one, since each country excludes its own set of public holidays.

When a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, most countries use an "observed" rule to shift the day off to the nearest weekday — typically the following Monday, though a small number of holidays (like the UK's Boxing Day) can shift to a different weekday if both December 25 and 26 fall on a weekend.
